What is the best way to start a conversation?

Ask a question! Approach the person you want to talk to and ask them an open-ended question and follow-up with other related questions and you will soon find yourself in a conversation. For example, lets say you are at the gas station and you desperately want to talk to the person pumping gas next to you, here is an example scenario:

You: Wow, have you noticed the increase in gas prices? Them: Yes, it is insane. You: Last time I was here it was 10 cents cheaper. Them: That is a pretty big increase. You: So, do you live around here? Them: Yes, in those new condos across the street. You: Those are nice, are you new to the area? Them: Yes, and I haven't had mush of a chance to explore it. You: There is a great restaurant up the street, have you been there yet? Them: No, but I hear they have great food. You: Maybe we could meet there sometime? Them: I'd love to! (Hopefully)

Asking questions keeps the person engaged in the conversation and keeps them interested in talking to you. Always make sure your questions give the person something to go on that they can talk about. It is more difficult to maintain a conversation with someone who just answers yes or no!

2) Just recently ended a long term relationship, or newly divorced.

3) Admits they are not ready for a relationship.

4) Doesn't listen to you, but continually talks about themselves.

5) Talk of your relationship does not include the future.

6) Vague about their feelings towards you.

7) Avoids an emotional investment in the relationship.

8) Doesn't introduce you to friends or family.
